Campaigners in London yesterday paid a early morning visit to Dow executives who were staying in the Mayfair Four Seasons Hotel to demonstrate that London does not want to play any part in their toxic legacy.
The sponsorship of the London Olympic games by Dow Chemical has sparked months of controversy over their involvement with the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, which still continues to plight the lives of thousands of the city’s poorest residents.
Dow who have been awarded a ten year sponsorship deal with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have additionally provided a plastic wrap for the outside of the East London Olympic stadium. Protests have been staged around the world to express outrage at the inappropriateness of the sponsorship of what the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) have claimed to be “the most sustainable Olympics yet.”
Drop Dow Now organised the wake up call to take the message straight to Dow Chemical. “Dow’s sponsorship of the Olympics means they will benefit financially for years to come, while those affected by the 1984 disaster have still not received fair compensation. We will remind them that it is time for Dow to acknowledge responsibility for Bhopal and deliver justice for the victims.”
