300 plus supporters for ‘Justice for Bhopal’ gather outside the Indian Mission in New York City today – with Bhopal survivor Sanjay Verma and Amnesty International ‘Take Action’ supporters in NYC.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the worlds worst industrial. On December2 1984 a toxic gas explosion in a Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical) factory killed over 8,000 overnight and some 25,000 to date. Over 100,000 people are currently battling debilitating illnesses directly related to the disaster while ten of thousands of children are born with crippling deformities. Dow Chemical and the Indian government are key stakeholders in this disaster but so far have failed to take any steps to clean up the still contaminated site or resolve the health crisis. Many victims are treated by the Sambhavna Trust Clinic.
Amnesty International urges the UN Human Rights Council to break silence on the Bhopal issue and pressure the US government to address and comply with ongoing legal actions and demand Dow Chemical clean up Bhopal rather than be complicit in this terrible situation.
