We are delighted to announce that as part of our Yoga for Bhopal 2020 program we will be holding a Yoga for Bhopal week this fall, from September 21st to September 27th. To celebrate the incredible work taking place at the Sambhavna clinic in Bhopal for survivors of the 1984 gas disaster, including physiotherapy using traditional yoga techniques, we are asking yoga instructors and studios across the UK to run workshops and fundraisers to support their efforts. If you are interested in running or attending a yoga event for Bhopal we would love to hear from you.
The Yoga for Bhopal Program
Yoga is used as a therapeutic technique with gas survivors at our Sambhavna clinic in Bhopal and has proved effective in treating a range of chronic ailments, including respiratory, musculo-skeletal and neurological conditions. They have also had great success treating women suffering from gynaecological conditions and other complications resulting from gas exposure. These traditional yoga techniques have been used alongside modern medicine since the clinic first opened in 1994 and have yielded startling results. The Yoga for Bhopal program was setup so that our supporters here in the UK can aid this ongoing work, in some cases teaching the same traditional yoga techniques used in Bhopal.
The Yoga for Bhopal program was first conceived by Meaghan Delahunt, an author and yoga instructor based in Edinburgh. Meaghan first started running yoga workshops to fundraise for Sambhavna after visiting Bhopal back in the year 2000. Since then yoga instructors and studios across the country have run events for Sambhavna, including yoga sessions, guided meditations, and in some cases even film screenings and meals with traditional Indian food.
Currently, due to Covid-19, we understand that many practitioners have moved their sessions online for the foreseeable future. Although we anticipate and hope that many centres will be able to re-open by September, we also have resources to assist those running online events. We hope that you will be able to join us for Yoga for Bhopal Week this September, or if you are interested in becoming a regular supporter of the program we run events year-round and would be delighted to help you get involved.
