From humble beginnings, Backwell Festival has grown into a much-loved independent music festival in an idyllic setting just outside of Bristol. Looking global, but loving local, Backwell offers an incredibly diverse and eclectic line-up with an emphasis on world rhythms, theatre and educational workshops. But Backwell is much more than a weekend of great music and promotes good food, creativity and art, while raising money for local and global good causes. The Bhopal Medical Appeal was Backwell’s nominated overseas charity for 2018.

Bhopal Medical Appeal’s Events Fundraiser, Matt Kay was at Backwell:
“The Festival kicked off, in fine Backwell style, with a rousing theatrical performance from local group, INKBLOC Ensemble telling a story of local people, fish and chips and Lego! Followed by the incredible Matuki, getting the dancefloor moving with their unique blend of afrofunk and jazz style.
“Saturday was blessed with glorious sunshine as well as England’s quarter final victory which was screened at the festival. The cheers of football-related joy rang out across the festival and, once England had secured their position in the semi-finals, the festival goers poured out, creating one of the happiest and friendliest crowds I have ever experienced at a festival.
“The joyful attitude continued through to Sunday, though at a slightly slower pace with a few people clearly feeling the after-effects of Saturday’s high spirits! Thankfully there were loads of fantastic food and drink options on hand to get people back into the swing of things.”
We at the Bhopal Medical Appeal want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Jane Sabherwal and her team for their hard work and dedication to make this festival happen and for naming us as their international charity of the year.
