On the 28th January a curative petition seeking additional compensation for the victims of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy will be heard by a five-judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court.
The Petition states that the compensation agreed by the supreme court in 1989 was based on incorrect numbers of deaths and injured and the figures were much higher than stated in 1989. It seeks a sum of between $629 million and $1.2 billion for victims. It also asks for stricter punishment for Union Carbide/Dow Chemical due to a series of design flaws and failures in safety mechanisms.
This is huge news for survivors in Bhopal and around the world. We will keep you updated on our blog and we will be sharing all updates on our social media channels as they happen.
