Long-term Bhopal Medical Appeal supporter, Fiona Mackey, has just successfully completed a major fundraising initiative to raise money specifically for the Chingari Rehabilitation Centre. Over seven days she walked the 62 miles from her home in Oxford to the source of the River Thames at Kemble. Fiona is now 76 years of age and says she is lucky to be sufficiently fit and healthy to undertake this challenge! Fiona raised a sizeable amount of money from appealing to her friends and supporters and we produced a special fundraising leaflet to help promote her event.
Fiona has raised funds and awareness for us over many years. One of her most notable challenges being her bicycle ride from Dieppe to Versailles on her trusty Brompton bike in June 2013.
“Three years ago, when I was about to cycle from Dieppe to Versailles to raise money for two charities – The Bhopal Medical Appeal and IraqChild – I wrote that I had a passion for world-wide equality; I said that I was sickened by materialism and considered that no one should have to live in poverty. I explained that, in my view, every child has a right to a good childhood, and that I wanted to raise money to help needy children.
“The generous response of my friends and other sponsors to my cycle ride was overwhelming, as was the case when, a year later, I walked along the canal towpath from Oxford to Banbury to raise money for IraqChild. Since then my views have not changed save that, now aged 76, increasingly I see myself as very privileged still to be able to undertake fairly athletic fundraising!
“This year my Sponsored Walk will be carried out solely to raise funds for the Chingari Children’s Rehabilitation Centre at Bhopal. I intend, during August, to walk along the Thames Path from Oxford to the source of the River Thames near Kemble. The total length of the walk will be 62 miles and I’m planning to complete it over the course of seven days, some of which will be consecutive.”
We would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to Fiona from the children she is so dedicated to helping at Chingari.
